Test: Which substances are used in your lip balm?

3. nov 2017

When you use lip balm you will unavoidably ‘eat’ some of the content and absorb some of the substances in your body. The Danish Consumer Council THINK Chemicals has examined 53 lip balms and vaselines for contents of problematic chemicals.

Lip balms: Several products without problematic chemicals

The Danish Consumer Council THINK Chemicals has examined 53 lip balms and vaselines for substances such as perfume, suspected endocrine disruptors and ingredients based on mineral oils.

In the test 13 products receives the best mark for being without any of the mentioned substances.

See the tested lip balms with assessments at the bottom of the article.

The cocktail effect: 9 lip balms receive the lowest assessment

In the test 9 lip balms receive the lowest assessment. This is primarily due to content of substances which is suspected of being endocrine disrupters.

A single product containing problematic substances does not pose a risk in itself..

But your combined exposure to chemicals such as endocrine disrupting substances may be problematic in the long run, scientists suggest. Therefore it is wise to minimize your exposure when possible.

Mineral oils: Ingredients based on minerals oils are problematic

Several lip balms in the test contain ingredients based on mineral oils. Petrolatum and paraffinum are examples of these ingredients.

Mineral oils are problematic in food since some of them can be carcinogenic and others can accumulate in the body’s organs for example the liver and spleen.

The EU's scientific committee, SCCS, expect that you ‘eat’ 4 lip balms each year if you use lip balm on a daily basis.

Consequently, ingredients based on mineral oils trigger a middle assessment in the test.
